People may start smoking cause it's cool, but that not why they keep doing it. I like cigarettes and I enjoy smoking. They may not be the healthiest things, but everything is dangerous when used in excess.

How else is an animal gonna reproduce?? Do you not have casual sexual intercourse that is for pleasure instead of making babies?? Most people do things because they enjoy them. I enjoy smoking a few cigarettes when I am hanging out and having a beer, another vice which I enjoy.

Why do I like cigarettes? Why do I like ketchup and not mustard? Why do I like onions and hate pickles? It's totally a personal opinion. I like cigarettes. I will say that parental influences play a major role in what people like. Both of my parents and most of my relatives smoke, not saying that is why I smoke, but your family does influence you.

Onions rock, pickles suck, and I'm smoke-free for two weeks! Not that I was particularly hooked in the first place, but my ex got me started on it. There's just something about that caffeine and nicotine combo that's hard to resist.

Anything done in excess might have adverse effects on your body, but it can cope. For example: Hyperventilation can cause you to blow off a lot of CO2 and your blood will become alkalic, but it can be compensated with your kidneys excreting more HCO3.
Smoking (and usually smoking is in excess) causes all sorts of problems. Usually COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and then most likely will eventually lead to emphysema. Cancer of course is another big problem. As much as you might want to, it's bad news to mutate your DNA. In addition, smoking can lead to many other issues such as a plethora of cardiovascular diseases.
We all get the right to autonomy (except when it comes to highly contagious diseases) and you can choose to smoke cigarettes. The taxes help pay for many things and your insurance will eventually pay me. Smokers are what i like to call "job security."

Brugger, I don't disagree with any of that. I am well aware of the dangers of smoking. But did you know that studies have shown that over time lungs can recover from years of smoking? I enjoy smoking about a pack a week and I am willing to take the risks.

bfresham: I'm aware that your body can repair itself to some extent. Even nerves can, but just not at a rate fast enough to show any significant improvement. I think a pack a week would not put you at high risk, however, remember, your risk is calculated by pack years. You're at ~.35 pack years where many are at 2.5 pack years. Your body is pretty much one big filter; the more you abuse it, the quicker it expires.
Tweak: I am the proud owner of a 2005 Jeep Liberty, 4x4 Automatic. It's a "compact SUV" (which at times sounds like an oxymoron). The Jeep Liberty is excellent as far as emissions goes. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2005_Jeep_Cherokee.shtml ranks my Jeep's EPA Air Pollution Score at 6 our of 10.

Infiniti G35 - 6
Ford Exploer - ~2
Corvette - 3
Mustang - 6
Escalade - 3
My old Ford Taurus that i traded in is ~2 (they don't have the 1999 model listed).
In addition, this is with "normal driving" where you would be driving the average 1000-1500 miles a month. I am averaging ~485 miles/month where most of it is highway.
I think i'm doing my part for the environment. And as for people's health... {cough}med school{cough}
