You're right, I'm going to SUNY Upstate Medical in Syracuse, NY.
So why the commissioning?
The Navy has a great scholarship opportunity for the Health Professions. The Navy is paying for all of my tuition, books, and fees in addition to paying me a monthly salary of $1185. So while i'm in medical school i'm essentially making $50,000/year. Then when i come out of medical school, i can go into a Navy residency program where i'll be paid nearly twice as much as a civilian resident (~$60,000 where a civilian will make ~$30-40,000). After my residency i then "pay back" the Navy with four years of service where i'll be paid in upwards of $110,000/year without having to worry about malpractice insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, housing costs, etc.
I think it's a great opportunity to get my education and serve my nation.
