"Hey, my name is redneck dude. Im really sad the the south fell to the North. I think this rebel flag is cool. I want all black folk back in the cotton field. I believe that slavery was fine, and that afro americans are just property."

"Hey, my name is Xavionblue. Im only part black. I dont find the flag offensive, but i think it represents a dark time in our nation, when we could not get along a killed our brothers and sisters over the rights of people of color to be free."--BOOOYA

Once again, I agree with Burns. I understand representing customs you believe in, but all they believed in was slavery. I don't see how a rebel flag is allowed and a Nazi flag isn't.

A short history lesson before more ignorant (yes ignorant, meaning lacking knowledge, which is different than being stupid) people post comments like "damn rednecks" or "racist".

Fact of the matter is yes it is Heritage and not hate for many people, especially those of us who live in the south. I personally have several family members who died in the civil war, fighting for what they believed was right, fighting for The Confederate States of America, or as you may call it, "the south." What you call the "Rebel flag" has ABSOLUTLY NOTHING TO DO WITH SLAVERY! After the 13 states suceeded from the United States, and the civil war began, Confederate troops were fighting Confederate troops and United States troops were fighting United States troops. This is because The official flag of the Confederate States of America so closely resembled the American flag often soldiers were confused. (Yes I say United States instead of "Union" because I personally believe the succession to be legal and a protected right under the US Constitution.)

Furthermore the "Rebel Flag" was chosen as The Confederate States of America's Battle flag, to be used in wartime. Our flag is also referred to as "The British Battle Jack" because it was the official flag of the British Navy. This flag was a symbol to the United States to remind the US that they fought against England for the same reasons. RIGHTS AND FREEDOM!!

And just to let you know slavery was not just in the South. Even after the civil war when slavery was outlawed in the former 13 Confederate states, some northern states still allowed it.

I'll get off my soapbox now, just everyone should know that the flag has nothing to do with racism. The only bad thing that the flag represents is that a country was divided in order to keep the rights that they had already fought for, fought for along side of those they were now fighting against.

Because it's a sign of the south. As far as I'm concerned... it's just like all the Puerto Ricans that dangle the mini PR flags from their rear view mirror! If the Puerto Ricans can be proud of where they are from... why can the southerns? No one attacks them! Obviously slavery isn't an issue anymore... It's like Kai said... it was a dark part of our past... and everyone needs to get over it. It was an awful thing for people do... no one aside from criminals should be held against their will... but it ended YEARS ago. It's just like you said Troux "all THEY believeD in" (past tense) was slavery. "They" aren't alive anymore and neither is slavery. So what is left is the flag... which wasn't a symbol for slave drivers... it was/is a symbol of the south. I'm damn proud to be from the south!

Now... I know I'm gonna get slammed for saying all this... but for the people that I just pissed off... I'm not racist... I have no problem with black people or Puerto Ricans or anyone else. Yeah... my roots are in Mississippi and throughout the rest of the south... but my family never had slaves, they were against it... so not EVERYONE in the south was into it. What I have a problem with is ignorance.

As far as the Nazi flag thing goes, it's completely different. The rebel flag has always been a sign of a REGION... not a movement like collecting Jews and killing them or rounding people from African and making them work against their will.

You brought up a good point, and I should probably clarify something I said.
Yes I have family that fought in the Civil War, and none of them ever owned slaves.

The Puerto Ricans don't represent a dark part of our past. The Puerto Ricans withold their pride because they have been oppressed for years and years and they're in a constant struggle to just be a political entity. The rebel flag to me represents rebels, the people who died in an effort to destroy America. Yes, they fought for what they believed in, which is respectable, but that doesn't make it right. They were trying to defend slavery.

time to own you with Puerto Rican Intellect.

The flag was the banner that represented those who opposed a change("rebels") in how the country worked, the major change being to abolish slavery. Yes, Irish, there was remnants of slavery in the north, but it was not legal, and there were many people up north that would support a "slave" if they decided to run. However, the "slaves" that thought of doing that in the south ultimately saw themselves hanging from trees.

The real representation comes from the people that align themselves with that flag. Their behaviour and actions is what becomes associated with the flag. The coloured pieces of cloth simply give everyone a place to stand in the great big file cabinet of life. Obviously, some people are unfairly stereotyped by this process, but are unwilling to forget their past and history just to be perceived by others in a more flattering light.

If you stand behind the Confederate flag out of pride for your ancestory, then that's your choice. If you stand behind the Confederate flag because it looks cool, then that's your choice. If you stand behind the Confederate flag out of your own bigotry(racist views), then that's your choice too.

Personally, I couldn't care less. In the end, it's a bit of cloth. That's all flags are... cloth. To me, flags don't represent shit. (A parallelism is between those people that act like "Thugs" because of rappers, but in the end, dont know the real shit.)

All that can be asked is that you keep an open mind about the world and not judge everyone else by the aesthetics... looks mean nothing when it comes to getting to know your fellow human beings.
