i wouldnt say that... shotokan strikes are very powerful, easily capable of incapacitating someone. That elbow strike there doesnt take much break ribs, and in the end you only need to hurt them enough so that they dont wanna play anymore. The most important factor i think is getting the mindset to allow yourself to inflict damage. No sport can do that for you, only experience.

Do you train in any martial art?

well, our sensei says... "No martial art will guarentee your win in a fight. A man can stand around the corner with a shovel and hit me as I turn, chances are I would get hit. But a martial art can give you an edge."

In truth, if "fighting" is the only reason you want to study a martial art, then you need to take some sort of military pratice, like Krav Maga. There is much more to a martial art then your ability to beat someone up. Most of the time you arent in a one to one situation anyway. More then likely you will have more then one opponents, some of whom may be armed. In my opinion, for just pure one on one sparring, something like jujitsu is probably better, for self defence things like Krav Maga. But i enjoy karate, and Kenjutsu, not because it makes me a "bad ass" but because the training is difficult and fun.

a few months ago, we had to take classes from a supposed "jujitsu world champ" named "Master G" hahaha his class was kind of a joke. plus we took the class while wearing 45lb flack vests and kevlars. it was silly and so was he. that is all.

I was a first degree black in TKD and I'll say anyone who thinks it doesnt pertain to a real fight is just a dumbass with no experience in martial arts other than the occassional jackie chan movie.

kicks, elbows and other strikes all work well in a regular fight. if youre just going to square off and punch neither of you has an advantage. you can do more damage with something other than a punch

I've studied (and still do) Krav Maga and I'll tell you that DOES beat the pants off most martial arts but it is more geared at defense. that would be to say defense with a retaliation thats going to kill someone haha

People who take martial arts don't take it so they can beat someone up, that's not the point. So saying that you have beaten up black belts doesn’t mean you are stronger, it just means you get into too many fights. Martial arts is more about learning how to focus and developing your body mentally and physically. I in karate so I know how to avoid being in a fight, fighting is silly. There are other ways to solve problems.

aye, sometimes it is unavoidable, and fights are usually started by those who know the least about them...

In the end, I would say you wanna fight, join the military. There are few other cases were you can train for the sole purpose of fighting. And really when it comes down to it, I have to agree with what my Israeli brother and father always say... you go fight them with your hands, we prefer guided rockets.

A nice qoute to sum up my opinion on the subject.

"No one nation or people has a monopoly on the sun and no one art or
system as a monopoly on truth." - Mike Casto"

^^ and to you Stacy, good job at the kyu test. I honestly think you were one of our best new comers this season. Keep up the good spirit and cya at training.

I've always found the martial arts interesting. I took Tae Kwon Do for a year and it was great. BTW, I met you before. You're Tyler's room mate right?
